The iRobot Roomba is a great little robotic vacuum cleaner that can vacuum while I get on with updating this website. Paying for a cleaner is a “luxury” that I have never felt justified the cost – but the Roomba can save me several hours of vacuuming every week for a lot less than paying someone else to do it.
Currys Partmaster also sell Roombas and Roomba parts and batteries – and delivery to Ireland appears to be available for £6.99
In the smartphone world there are currently two phones which stand above the rest as the best that money can buy, these are Samsung’s ‘Galaxy S4′ and the HTC One. Both phones have very similar prices, features and designs but which comes out on top as the best smartphone available in Ireland right now.
As consumers pay more and more for their smartphones they expect the build quality of their devices to be top notch, in this category it’s hard to match the HTC One. If you hold both of these monster phones in your hand you will instantly notice the difference in quality, with HTC preferring to use a metal casing over the plastic option preferred by Samsung. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but if you want greater durability and a nicer feel then the HTC One wins every time.
As you can expect with devices of this nature, both have excellent cameras, however HTC stepped in a different direction by equipping the ‘One’ with a 4 Megapixel ‘Ultrapixel’ camera while the S4 has the more conventional 13 Megapixel. There are both pros and cons to both cameras, the ‘Ultrapixel’ is great for taking photos in low light areas as it allows more light into the shutter creating more detailed images, this would be great for taking snaps on a night out for example. The Galaxy S4’s camera is perfect for the more serious photographer, because it is 13 Megapixel rather than 4 your photos will look amazing even when they’re blown up in size. Overall the advantage in this category has to be given to the camera on the S4, although the HTC One preforms better in low light you can’t beat the S4 in daylight or when zooming or editing in any way. If you take a lot of pictures the S4 is definitely the phone for you.
Although it might not be of huge importance to many people there is a vast difference in the external speakers of these two devices. Samsung have put one small speaker at the back of the S4 while the HTC One has two front-facing, high quality speakers that are head and shoulders above any smartphone out there. This is a minor consideration but if you are playing a video from your phone for a group of people it makes a huge difference.
Both of these smartphones have amazing 1080p displays which blow any non-android phone’s out of the water. There really isn’t much difference between the two devices, the S4 has a 5 inch AMOLED display while the ‘One’ has a 4.7 inch LCD display, both will deliver sharp images with crisp and bright colours but the smaller screen of the HTC is compensated by its superior visibility outdoors.
The Galaxy S4 is currently shipping with the newest version of the Android operating system, Android 4.2, while the HTC One is using Android 4.1. This means that there are some extra features on the S4 that come along with 4.2 such as lock screen widgets, however it is expected that the HTC will be upgrading to the latest version in the near future.
In summary, both the HTC One and the Galaxy S4 are amazing feats of engineering which continue to push boundaries. HTC have a lot riding on their flagship smartphone, perhaps the future of the entire company, while Samsung have been at the top of the smartphone market since the release of the original Galaxy. Both have produced amazing phones and in the end it all comes down to personal preference, however I would give the slight edge to the HTC One, mainly based on it’s excellent build quality.
The Galaxy S4 and HTC One are both available from various phone operators across Ireland, prices for the devices and monthly plans vary but the best offer for both smartphones can be found over at Meteor.
The S4 is available for €99 for €49 per month over 24 months. This plan includes unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 5Gb of data allowance.
The HTC One is currently free on the same 24 month plan from Meteor, representing amazing value for money.
However both smartphones are selling out extremely quickly across the country so expect some shortages from time to time.
The Chromebook is a brand new take on the laptop. They are light, compact, very reasonably priced and run the new chrome operating system. So far they are primarily made by Samsung and their ‘WiFi’ model is the most popular in the series. Chromebooks are different to regular laptops due to the fact that the chrome operating system is essentially the internet. There are no native programmes on the machine, everything is done through the browser or via apps. Chromebooks are designed to be used as a main home computer, they are for people who want quick access to the internet either at home or on the go, with the advantage of a real full-sized keyboard. They would also be perfect for anyone with limited technological experience as they are extremely simple to use.
The main advantage of the chrome operating system is safety and functionality. Because everything is done using chrome, using only google trusted software, anything out of the ordinary is immediately deleted which significantly reduces your chances of getting a virus. Also, because everything you do is synced by google, whether it’s through ‘Google Docs’ or ‘Google Drive’ you’ll be able to access your files on almost any device. Although the Samsung Chromebook only has a small 16Gb hard drive you are given access to up to 100Gb of storage on Google Drive for free.
Under the hood of the Samsung Chromebook is an ARM processor, similar to a smartphone or tablet. Although that doesn’t sound powerful for a laptop the chromebook requires very little processing power. It also has both a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 port along with a HDMI slot and an SD card reader. The laptop itself is extremely light and thin, weighing just 2Kg, so it’s perfect for taking anywhere.
If you like to play games or use technical programmes such as photo or video editing software then maybe it isn’t for you. However, if you enjoy writing on the move but would prefer to be using a keyboard rather than a touchscreen, or if you would like quick and easy access to the internet wherever there is a WiFi connection then the Samsung Chromebook is the perfect device. It’s tiny price tag means that it could be purchased as a second or even third laptop for your home and it’s perfect for students to take notes in lectures without the hassle of carrying a heavy laptop all day.
